Reflections on Manhood

This morning I read 1 Samuel chapters 9 & 26 about Saul and David in their pre-king states. Both due to be kings: One handsome and tall as befitting a king yet became selfish and unrepentant. The other, of very unroyal upbringing, yet as we know, truly sought God heart and soul.

Three thoughts passed my mind:

1) Why does God set Himself up for disappointment? Does He take chances? After all, we--man--get to choose our path.

2) God expects us to honour our appointed leaders--even if it's one who schemes and is out to get you. Post-elections ponder...

3) Saul had no idea what was coming his way. He was focused on his task of finding his father's lost donkeys. And somehow thought his family unworthy, although Kish's family is described as wealthy and influential.

Manhood. Who is the man we follow? What lessons do we have to learn?
